Horse Eggbutts

An eggbutt fixes the mouthpiece to the ring, and that small design change is why so many riders move to one. Because the cheek can’t rotate, the bit stays still and won’t pinch the lips the way a loose ring sometimes can.

That stillness is the selling point. Sensitive horses, or ones that fuss and chew at a mobile bit, tend to accept an eggbutt more readily because there’s nothing sliding about in the mouth. It also stops the bit being pulled through, which is a genuine risk on a strong horse ridden in a plain loose ring. You lose a touch of the tongue movement a loose ring offers, so it comes down to what your horse actually settles in.
